Dr. Banjaran Surya Indrastomo

Dr. Banjaran Surya Indrastomo, based in Indonesia, is a seasoned academician with a unique blend of experiences. While holding the position of Chief Economist at PT. Bank Syariah Indonesia tbk, he has continued to teach and conduct research at the University of Indonesia. This dual exposure to both industry and academia has equipped him with the ability to bridge theory and practice, fostering the development of theoretical frameworks that closely mirror real-world scenarios.

Banjaran’s distinctive skills and expertise have been instrumental in aiding Indonesia’s largest Islamic bank in establishing a robust internal research and analytical capability, essential for navigating the challenges of Big Data and VUCA while charting the bank’s strategic direction. Simultaneously, he has been deeply involved in impactful research in Islamic economics and finance within Indonesia. This work has contributed to the formulation of frameworks, policies, and best practices that promote the integration of Islamic values into broader economic practices, particularly in the development of the Islamic financial sector.

Since 2014, Banjaran has ventured into the realm of digital economy, actively engaged in building startups, with a focus on lifestyle and payment solutions. However, his passion for research remains unwavering, driving him to concentrate on research and development in the digital economy. Presently, Banjaran serves as the Head of the Islamic Digital Economy Research Cluster at the Centre of Shari’ah Economic and Business (PEBS), located within the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Indonesia. He also plays a significant role as a member and lead analyst at the Indonesia Islamic Economy Board, a division of the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BES-KADIN).
